Hot Rolled Steel
Hot Rolled steel is quite literally hot off the press. It is the first finished product after the raw carbon steel has been rolled on a press at an extremely high temperature. Since it has not been processed much, the sheets appear to have a “scaley” surface and are usually more cost efficient.
Hot Rolled Dry, as it is sometimes referred as, is used for projects that do not require minute dimension and where the surface look does not matter. This may include railroad tracks, railcar parts, storage racks, doors, and truck and car frames to name just a few.
There is also Hot Rolled Picked and Oiled, also known as HRP&O. This material has had an additional processing step. To remove the impurities from the sheet, it undergoes a pickling process whereby acid is poured on the sheet, it is then dried, and oil is added to reduce the risk of rust or corrosion occurring.
